UPS Shooting- San Francisco (Rant & News thread)

baklava

I don’t work at UPS anymore.
Wrong building, happened in SF not Bruno, two different buildings. I know this can be confusing:

The San Francisco building is located on San Bruno Ave, which is in San Francisco. The San Bruno building is not in San Francisco, nor is it even in the city of San Bruno; it's actually in South San Francisco, which is an entirely different city than San Francisco.

Got it?

A union official says the gunman who shot and killed three people at a UPS warehouse in San Francisco had filed a grievance complaining that he was working excessive overtime.

Joseph Cilia, an official with a local Teamsters Union, says Jimmy Lam's grievance filed in March requested that UPS relieve him of working overtime going forward.
I have known 3 UPS managers and 2 full time UPS hour-lies that have had mental breakdowns caused by excessive hours and pressure severe enough that they could no longer work at UPS.

One committed suicide, he was my friend.

The culture at UPS is toxic. The excessive hours and pressure to preform break some. You have to have really thick skin to take it. It took me 15 years at UPS before I could shrug off the harassment and pressure. It should not be this way for managers or hour-lies.

People have a God given right to be treated with respect and dignity.

Don't get me wrong. What he did can never be justified. But it is high time UPS treated their employees with the respect and dignity they deserve.

UPS has declared all their buildings "gun free zones". So how did a shooting occur in a gun free zone?? I KNOW.....because gun free zones don't work!
Well Chicago is a "gun free zone" too and yet they have more shootings/murders on many days than what goes on in Afghanistan. A gun free zone requires everyone to abide by those rules. All it takes is one or more to not agree and then gun free zones turn into slaughter zones. Gun free zones are targeted by bad guys because they know nobody will be armed to fight back.

What's more concerning is how we are all out of different hubs around the globe yet here we are talking about how bad security and how this isn't a surprise. This could have easily happened anywhere.
Your right!!! I just joined this sight tonight. Can't sleep. My husband is feeder driver. He was shot at on I70 in st Louis last year. He was not hit but blew out his Windows. He's not been released by his doctors. Suffers from PTSD. UPS made him go to work last week. I was terrified. They had him come in for 4 hrs last Friday. They haven't ask him back. They said they would give him 24 notice when they want him to come back in. They've not called him back, but he's a mess. More than 32yrs Service, 28 yrs safe driving and they took away our insurance and won't pay him earned vacation pay. Oh yes he filed a grievance but what a joke.

Sorry to hear this , feeders is a dangerous enough job , let alone being shot at and the angry drivers on the road that we deal with each day and night !
I hope your husband gets through this and you lawyer up !
My prayers are with you !

One of our benefits is having health insurance that covers therapy and psychiatric appointments. I don't get how people can let their health decline to such a state or their loved ones turn a blind eye to it. You got to just walk away from everything if you are considering suicide and murder.

You do realize that this is the Rant thread?
UPS Shooting- San Francisco (Rant & News thread)
Pretend it is in Current Events

It's been changed at least three times by an ocd MOD with too much idle time. Don't you have some silverware to organize?

Kicked Your Dog

25 Year UPSer/SoCal Feeder
I don't know why you got your undies in a bunch. What "kicked your dog" said was true. Maybe that's what upset you. We have no doubt you can attack hourly for dishonesty, and we're sure you do OFTEN. How often do you attack your brethren for the same dishonesty? Not as often has you do hourly I bet. Looking the other way when drivers get into their cars to go over their loads is their choice, right? That sup getting on the belt, , , well what's the harm, huh? A package sup did a pick up and you have 300 extra pieces that have to go somewhere? Well what's the harm, it's gotta go somewhere. Talking to that driver real quick before his start time or PCM? He's right there not doing anything, why not?? YEAH, you said in so many words. There's plenty of dishonesty to go around. The difference is, you're probably more accepting of it when management does it, than an hourly being dishonest. I'm glad I was sitting down for that big surprise!! Years ago, drivers used to get in an hour early to sheet and line up their truck. Than you throw those numbers in our face, knowing damn well how they got those numbers. Running their stops off? Well let me turn my head again, because I don't condone, what I don't see. Skipping breaks and meals? Hey, who are you to stop them, right? Take 10 minutes too long, and now we have an issue!
The 9.5 list? yeah, I won't argue much about that one. I know what you mean. But it doesn't say much for you when you had to be forced to do it, after telling your drivers for years you couldn't do it. More dishonesty? And you call someone who works that steady 9.48 stealing? That is just another example of the stuff that caused this today. EVERYTHING NOW IS DISHONESTY. LARGEST FREAKIN UMBRELLA ON THE PLANET. Just look at all the items falling under "stealing time". grabbing a coffee, talking to someone when not on break, attempts have been made on urinating off breaks. While you're firing the guy for dishonesty for grabbing a cup of coffee while not on break, how about you fire yourself for telling us you couldn't keep a driver under 9.5 but found out you could when you started paying grievances for it? Plenty of dishonesty to go around.
As for your production standards, I'm okay with you posting thought on that. I have some thoughts on those too!
Change things by going into work tomorrow and say good morning and mean it? Have a conversation that's not work related? Would there really be any problem with that, if I started that conversation, right after the PCM??? Gee, let me guess! You live in our community, but you don't wanna have a conversation with me or the majority of your people. Be honest with yourself. Why don't we chat with you? Just read your message. Who in your center wants to chat with you and why? It appears you forget you are the manager. That means, you do the managing. It is up to you to fuel that energy in your center, not your drivers! Are you serious? You have totally lost touch. No, I take that back. Maybe not. This is the UPS of today. You probably weren't around when we were sheeting our packages were you (I accept I could be wrong)?? 25 years max? Management of today leave a lot to be desired, compared to the managers who knew how to manage. I include to fools on the board. UPS'ers? No freakin way!
Would you like to change things at your center? Then being as your the manger of your center, how about you start changing things? I'm not holding my breath. While you may feel you are not at each others throats in your center, I wonder if the 20 year guys feel the same.
You may wanna look into that mirror you may have up in your dressing room and ask a similar question; Am I successful at creating a productive pleasant comfortable place to work, where my people don't feel they are being watched all the time? Let see if your answer isn't filled with asterisks, footnotes, hyperbole and equivocation?
Preach, Brother.

Ups prides itself in taking all kinds of people from the street and turning them into robots that follow methods, keep the brisk pace, take the ass chewing put downs, demoralizing atmosphere and yet still are expected to not only get used to it but also to insulate the customers from it with a cheery attitude.

Mgmt doesn't have this added nugget (most of the time) because they don't interact with the public hundreds of times a day, thousands a week and millions throughout a career.

This :censored2: bottles up, and with a weak or weakened constitution can get uncorked in some bad ways with the wrong worker.

It's a risk at any job, but I can only speak to my time at UPS. I saw it in my small center with a few individuals I worked with, more often than I liked. People have enough to deal with just living life. Ups doesn't care about whatever you have going wrong and assumes you are fit to take a punching if they want you to have one.

Profits are good and necessary. But, the risk is there and will remain under the current culture. I doubt meaningful change will take place as the deceased will be viewed as expendable victims, not of the system that's in place, but of their own failures. The driver failed the daily "test" of fitness under stress and mgmt failed to recognize it.

Corporate will implement zero changes. Because on their minds - Orion is perfect, preload is wonderful, the calendar pictures reflect the Xanadu atmosphere (and it's real!) and all is working like a finely tuned machine.

I saw another news report that suggested the shooter was upset over 9.5 grievances and specifically targeted 3 other drivers at the PCM. Sad situation.
