With all due respect for one hell of a guitarist in Steve Morse, nothing beats the classic lineup with the great Richie Blackmore.

RIP to the great Jon Lord who made the Hammond sound like an organ setting a bar few could ever even get close too.

And while Purple was enjoying the success of Machine Head, ex Purple vocalist Rod Evans along with Bobby Caldwell (drums) ex Johnny Winter, Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt (guitar) and Lee Dorman (bass) ex Iron Butterfly formed the Supergroup Captain Beyond.
Still love this stuff. Throw on a set of headphones and listen to Dorman who lays down some great bass lines. Loved him in Butterfly too.

Like Ian Gillan, another great singer of the early/mid 70's who could hit the high register was Uriah Heep's frontman, the late David Byron. One of the great pieces he did was off the 1971' classic Look At Yourself entitled July Morning. Fantastic piece.
