You have to be joking. Did they seriously measure your neck?

Anything less than 18" and you're a scrawny little dude if you ask me.

Who you callin' fat bastid?

The flavor of the month is sleep apnea.

We've lately been having our neck measured. They told me if my neck was more than 18 inches they would send me to be tested for a C-pap. I told them that's bullcrap since I've had an 18 inch neck since I was a teenager.

That comment by you may have saved you a sleep study.
Doctors try to avoid litigation, and mandating sleep studies is becoming a litigious issue.

Can DOT Medical Examiners Refuse Medical Cards Before Sleep Apnea Testing
  • October 15, 2013: The sleep apnea bill was signed into law by the President. The law forbids the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration from using guidance alone to address sleep apnea screening for drivers. It requires that if the agency take action regarding sleep apnea screening, that it do so via the formal rule-making process, and not guidance. Note: The law does not require that the FMCSA create a sleep apnea rule.

Yes it does, but it goes deeper than that.

  • The medical examiner’s job is not to diagnose. It is to assess the driver’s medical fitness to determine if any safety risk issues exist.
  • If there is a reasonable chance of risk then the examiner will request that a specialist in that field provide a proper diagnosis and treatment if necessary.
There is also a fine up to $10,000 to the medical examiner if he/she gives a DOT card to that has an accident possibly due to sleep apnea and, at the time of the physical, there were signs/symptoms of sleep apnea.

Doctors are just covering their butts. If your BMI is 35 or higher and your neck is 18" or larger, some are automatically sending you for a sleep study.

Not based on the FMCSA rules (which don't exist) but on their guidelines.

Myself, got to piss in the cup, but the nurse made a point of telling me it wasn't a drug screen (not sure why.. ). Eye test, hearing, hernia, standard physical.. The DOT I got for my previous job did have a drug screen.

I managed restaurants for a long time, and for a little while, insurance companies began to require a drug screen.. Didn't last very long, because we started losing our best staff because almost all of them wete potheads...I can only wonder if perhaps the same thinking might be prevalent here. I'm actually shocked that UPS isn't more stringent on drug testing, at least for drivers.. If they did it for preloaders, they probably wouldn't have many..
