I know right...drivers stroll in at 9am where the packages car is loaded already. It is really different job.
brutal. Good thing is they're all young.
they still have time to decide whether to stick it out or find something else. I made good friends with some of them. One used to be my preloader. I don't know what advice to give him. SoI just keep it pushing

Yeah, I feel sorry for them with heavy packages that are snuck in by customers. UPS lies about weight limit?

Analyst Thomas Wadewitz anticipates UPS’ March 26 investor day will shed light on its plans to support margin expansion and earnings growth even amid muted revenue trends. UPS shares closed up 4.9% on Tuesday, adding $5 billion to its market value.

We expect UPS to lay out two large levers for cost reduction including automation in buildings and rationalization of facilities that combined could support over $2 billion of annual cost savings over the next several years,” he wrote in a note to clients on Tuesday.

After a disappointing earnings report last week, UPS said it would save more than $1 billion by cutting 12,000 of its 85,000 management jobs. Wadewitz also sees potential for UPS to reduce headcount by 20,000 in its sorting and delivery stations through technologies including robotics, which he estimates would save the company roughly $1.1 billion.

He expects the cost savings to spur improved margin performance for its domestic package business this year and strong EPS growth in 2025 and 2026. Wadewitz notes UPS is also starting to win back some of the market share it lost to FedEx Corp. in 2023.

Like Ranger said, we have the additional pkg cars setting on the lot not going out. Ups is already paying the benefits of the additional drivers (maybe a little less if they were loading & not driving) fuel is about the same( still driving to the same addresses).
The other thing is the additional routes would most likely be filled with drivers in progression (cutting that # you posted in half)
The only additional payout would be 4 or 5 more loaders who won't stay long enough for benefits.

I'm not saying it would definitely be cheaper but I don't think it would really be much more.

The real reason they don't do it is because they want people quitting so they don't have to pay them a pension for the rest of their lives.
Been here since the 80’s, it’s what they do to make money, cut routes.

Had that conversation all too often. Every day, first few stops are even AND odds on a busy street. I never do the odds, I wait until later in the day when I'm going that direction, don't need to cross street. And I've mentioned this many times...never fixed, so who cares.

Enjoy some downtime and relax. Everyone is crying about overtime and not having a life. Now’s your chance to take a break chill out and spend some of the money we’ve been hoarding away. I’m looking forward to having a few burner weeks. Might even get out to New England.
Let's go fishing
