Well there's democracy and there's authoritarianism. In that vein a representative republic is a form of democracy, not the direct democracy the Greeks practiced. What many of us are concerned about is what appears to be a move towards authoritarianism by the Left. Trying to take guns away is a clue. A media that is lopsided towards one side. Same media suggests that there are right wing hate groups growing on the Right, with little evidence, while praising Leftist thugs who smash windows, physically attack others, shut down free speech on college campuses. And attack symbols of our heritage as if that'll change what's gone on before. Demagoguery everywhere.

With the willing and accepted blur between the separate branches, the choosing of what laws and regulations to enforce (by both parties), the gerrymandering for votes, the stacking of courts or refusal to confirm judges, one could argue that we do not live in either a democracy or a republic.
