Which indicates that you and I approach real life situations a bit differently at certain times.
I tend to push emotion down when I evaluate a situation ... not saying doing so is better ... just different.
In this case the only reason to support the state killing people is emotional. It's not an effective detterent for crime so it's only purpose is vengance, an emotional response.

Even one innocent person on death row is 'a lot'.

If you don't already know, you will appreciate what is called Blackstone's Formulation.

At one time I was pro death penalty but the deeper I studied the issue, historical and contemporary, the more I came to oppose it. Also watching the growing number of convicted people cleared by such as the Innocence Project raises the specter that what takes place in a courtroom can and often is out of political expedience as opposed to actual justice. My wife also works in law so I've seen it up close, especially the political angle that overwhelms the noble idea of justice.

I agree!
I tend to look at costs and effectiveness and efficiency.
My previous posts indicate this and I voted "NO".

The "noble idea of justice" is lost on the 9th Circuit court of appeals.
This is where I get lost with proponents of the death penalty. On one hand many supporters will decry the failures of the judiciary, then on the other they are willing to grant them the authority to kill. So many conservatives claim the government is corrupt but are in favor of that corrupt institution killing their fellow citizens as if in this one instance there are no potential faults in the system.

And so many liberals feel big government is the answer to everything except the military, border control, and criminal justice.

So true and in the case of conservatives, military, border and crime is their own form of centralized socialism.

"Every prison cell should be outfitted with a ceiling noose. Why should the convicts be forced to use dirty bed sheets to off themselves?"

You should gladly pay double taxation to achieve those ends to prove to everyone how committed you are to such an idea.
