Yes. They demonstrated this on "Mythbusters". It's just a handy method to get big tires seated on the rim. Our Goodyear tire guy had a big air tank with a nozzle and a swivel valve that did the same thing. Others use a ring to distribute the blast.

The 55 Chevy Bel Air didn't come with a 327.

Yep automotive technology and performance has come a long way. Modern 4 cyl with turbos can now give naturally aspirated big V8 a run for their money.

There's a website junkyard mechanics or something like that. These guys are building 1000 hp motors for like $1000
