Gun Ownership: An International Comparison - Independent Voter Network

Japan -
In Japan, most kinds of guns are illegal, and almost no one owns a gun. Japan is known as one of the strictest gun controlling nation in the world, with only 0.6 firearms per every 100 people. In 2006, there were only two homicides caused by guns in Japan. In 2008 there were 11. The country has nearly eliminated murder by firearms.

United Kingdom – The rate of private gun ownership in the United Kingdom is 6.72 firearms per 100 people. In 2009, only 18 people were murdered with a firearm. Within the last 14 years, the year with the highest number of gun caused homicides was 2004, with 52 people killed.
Australia – Ranked at No. 25 in comparison of number of privately owned guns in 178 other countries, about 15 out of every 100 Australians owns a firearm. Annual homicide rates involving firearms in the country is relatively low, at 0.1% per every 10,000 in 2009.
Germany – Ranked No. 4, in a comparison of the number of privately owned guns in 178 other countries, approx. 30 out of every 100 people in Germany own a firearm. Germany experiences far fewer gun related homicides annually than the United States. In 2010, there was a total of 158 homicides committed with a firearm.
United States – The United States is ranked at No. 1 for civilian gun ownership in comparison with all other industrialized countries. There are approximately 88.8 firearms for every 100 people in the U.S. In the past 14 years, the year with the greatest number of homicides caused by a firearm occurred in 2006, when 10,225 people were killed by the use of a gun. Annual firearm suicides within the United States are high as well. In 2005, 17,002 suicides were committed using a firearm.
The United States far surpasses other countries in terms of gun related violence and death. The numbers above tend to indicate that fewer gun-related homicides is a direct result of stricter gun control laws

Here's the story.

The reason it's not getting coverage (not even from FOX) is that there seems to be no corroboration for it from the cops or anyone else. Not saying that it didn't happen, but as near as I can tell there don't seem to be any other witnesses. Also note that Mr Meli is not claiming that the guy ran away shot himself because he saw Nick Meli with a gun, that twist is all coming from bloggers who weren't there. According to Meli he got behind a pillar, drew a bead on the guy, didn't shoot because he was worried about bystanders, then went and hid in a store. Maybe witnesses will come forward or security camera film will turn up that supports his story, but it seems odd that he didn't at least talk to the police.

so island, find any independent source corroborating the young man's story?

Just think DS, if only Toronto (2nd largest city in North America, I believe (after New York) ), would have the 2nd admentment.... those poor 40 per year or so killed in TO could have defended themselves and the murder number would have been closer to zero (according to American pro-gun idiots) !!!!!

Toronto and the rest of Canada don't have a second amendment because your country never ever bothered breaking away from the English Crown. One of the reasons you don't have guns up there is because the Queen is afraid that if you guys ever figured out who really runs your country, you might want to take up arms. That's why you don't have any.

Case closed!

I wonder what kind of world we would end up with if all the gun owners in the USA decided to all commit a major crime with their weapons all on the same day ?
Maybe call it something like take a pot shot at a liberal day

The politicians and uninformed sheeple who are jumping on the bandwagon to ban "assault weapons" kind of remind me of UPS's "Safety Committees". There are lots of buzzwords and catch phrases, lots of empty rhetoric and half-assed "feel good" solutions, and lots of people who simply want to take credit for being involved without having to do the work of taking an unbiased and painfully honest look at the underlying problems. It doesnt matter if they accomplish anything or not as long as they can pander to the electorate and make it look like they are accomplishing something. In the final analysis, we wont wind up being any safer once the ban gets passed, but I bet our schools will have even bigger "gun free zone" stickers plastered on the front doors, along with a few unarmed "security" guards who will walk around with badges and walkie-talkies making sure we all feel nice and safe.

Why should a mod edit?? We have people really and seriously saying "there will be blood" and "kill the NRA pres." out loud and in tweets that are in the public news right now.

Via Fox News:
The National Rifle Association, while staying mostly quiet in the immediate aftermath of the mass shooting in Connecticut, has registered an average of 8,000 new members a day since the tragedy, an NRA source told Fox News.

While this broadly aligns with trends seen after similar incidents in the past, the surge in membership this time is said to dwarf past trends.

The source, based on his access to an internal memo prepared by the organization’s membership division, said both the number of individual contributions to the NRA and their average amount have risen significantly in this period.

Amid the uptick, the NRA is planning what it describes as a “major” news conference on Friday. In its first public statement since last week’s shooting, issued Tuesday by an aide to NRA President Wayne LaPierre, the organization also conveyed condolences to the murder victims’ families and expressed the group’s willingness to offer “meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.”

I'm OK with outlawing assault rifles.....................but nuts like Sheila Jackson Lee want all Americans to turn in all their arms.

Assault bans were in effect before and Columbine took place, so pass the law, but it's not going to change people's mental states.
