Local 25 Teamsters borderline criminal act?

How do you feel about this situation?

Everyone had a chance to vote.

A 120,000 members decided.... it wasn't worth their time.

Don't forget the part where more than half who did vote had their votes disregarded.

You're also leaving out the part where local leadership changed the 16 payments of $32 into one payment. Or do you condone that type of act from local leadership?

Whoa....

I explicitly stated in another thread, what my thoughts were.

It's in the Local's bylaws.... which are subsequently approved by the IBT.

It would take a motion to be made (and read) at 3 consecutive membership

meetings and then voted on by the members to change it.

That $500 initiation fee is steep, but applies to all new members.

Not just part-time UPS people. But, the Local dropped the ball on this.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Or.... accuse people of something they didn't say.

I didn't see the previous post which was informative.

I just think this is a terrible way for a local to act. The $500 is rediculous, but to make seasonals making $11 pay that amount is wrong. Making part-time employees pay $54 a month is also wrong, if they're only making $11 an hour.

I saw that article last night. "Union scum?" Is there a possible slant to that site?

And then all the commenters were just working themselves into a lather about right to work laws in the comments...oh, you mean right to get fired laws? Yeah, those are great. No bias at all.

Garbage :censored2:ing site.

Starting wage is a waste of time.
That is true of most low wage jobs. Without paying a $500 employment fee and monthly dues.
Everyone knows when hired what the initial fee is. There is some information that is lost in these news articles.
A few I have are:
How many employees has this happened to?
How many were hired (article said thousands)?
This woman had her whole Christmas week check taken. Did she work weeks prior without fees taken? Was this her first and only week of work? Which union representative did she speak to?
The point is, I had a part time initiation fee of $300 when I was making $8 an hour. Right or wrong, I knew the deal. It sucks that this happened the week of Christmas but before we put the onus on someone or something, let’s see where the truth takes us.

The union lied to them and took their entire paycheck .

They have no benefits. Zero. nothing. And thanks to local 25 they made about 15 cents an hour .

Now local 25 have refused to say the total amount of the money they stole. But it's clear as day that they stole it.

This is what Local 25 is saying. Local 25 says that UPS was not sending over initiation payments for new members for awhile. So Local 25 said that if UPS continued in this manner, Local 25 would take everything at once, which they did. Yes every seasonal was aware that their initiation fee was $500 dollars. But what they were not aware of or never signed up for was giving their entire check to Local 25 a few weeks before Christmas. That's what Local 25 fails to understand. Yes the money was owed, yes the Company was dragging their feet but at no time should you take any members money without their approval. It's common sense and the right thing to do. I'll gladly wait for a rebuttal from any official from Local 25

There are other threads that already covered this. The union was only supposed to take $32/week. The question is, who screwed up, the company or the union? Regardless of who was at fault, the union should live up to their agreement with the workers and refund them the difference.

The benefit in local 25 is unless you commit murder, you’ll always have a job.

Not if you are seasonal... the only reason seasonals should have to initiate is if the union finds them other work throughout the year. Otherwise, a temporary worker should be a temporary union member, responsible only for dues while they are working.
