ORION

UPS doesn't care what we think as drivers they are not going to take a vote and see if we all like Orion. They really could careless what we think as long as the bottom line continues to grow. How many supervisors have loaded 5 trucks in the morning? Yet they still bitch when there is one mis load .

I usually don't see eye to eye with Upstate but I think he's pretty spot on with this.

UPS wants to be able to hire anyone off the street and plug them into a route and get it mostly done with ORION if that is what you mean. The fact that service would suck and customers would complain wouldn't matter.

Perhaps but a blind man could see what the company has planned for Orion.

They will roll out Orion 2.0 once they have worked out all of the kinks with Orion 1.0

2018 will be very interesting---UPS will have their hold card (Orion) and the Union will lose what little leverage they may have left.

When has UPS ever "worked the kinks" out of anything?

"Working the kinks" out would require an honest and realistic assessment of the problems with the current version of ORION, which would require operations-level management people who have the balls to speak the truth to their superiors.

That's just not what we do at UPS.

We the drivers are expected to work out the kinks on a day to day basis. Unfourtunatly that's our life.

UPS will just do the same as in the past. When they hit a deadline they just declare its ready and implement anyway. As for fixing the problems later, they will ignore because it would take too much effort to fix. When new updates come they will just add on to a broken system and make it worse. ORION can be tweaked but not when it requires massive changes to almost every route. A few token route will probably get special attention but that will be because they had fewer problems and much easier to work with. That is probably what will happen in the BOG but it will not mirror the majority of the country.

It will take a once in a lifetime mathematician to solve the Traveling Salesmen Problem, else a well trained human being is much faster than a computer and also offers customer service and a bit of charm.

Unfortunately UPS has stopped training up human beings and instead wants to dumb them down in order to pay unskilled wages. Also many drivers suck at life and it is hard to get rid of them.

The End.
The math is not the problem. They have the math figured out. The problem is with the equation.

The fastest and most powerful Cray computers in the world have crunched the numbers.

Unless you change the fundamental laws of math, the best solution that can be achieved is 85%

And this is the absolute best.

UPS is spending billions on a system that can achieve an absolute maximum of 85%

Realistically, it is more like a consistent 50 to 70%

Billions on a system that is usually only half right.

Way to go UPS! Tell this to your shareholders and Wall Street.

Sure it will. Hand the DIAD, which is set up by Orion, to a much lower paid new hire and tell him/her to follow it stop for stop. "Area knowledge" will be replaced by "delivery for dummies".

There is no one here that cannot be replaced by a lower paid new hire. The Company knows this and, sadly, so does the Union.

A driver capped at $25/hr with full benefits taking 10 hours to do a route under ODO compared to a seasoned vet taking 9 hours to do it the right way will save UPS over $50/day per driver.

This equates to over $1B annually saved on wages.

Don't think for a second that UPS hasn't done the math.

Would you strike for the unborn?

UPS keeps current employees where they are at with annual raises. Caps new hires at $25/hr with full benefits.

This is the top rate at FedEx, DHL, all the union trucking firms, USPS etc.

They can, and will, get good employees who will stay for $25/hr with full medical and pension.

Nobody, or very few, would strike over this issue. Current employees don't care because their wage remains the same.

And in 30 years, UPS will have all $25/hr drivers.

What if you're a cover driver?

It wont take 30 years.

Once attrition and retirements have brought the number of "capped" $25/hr drivers up to 51% of the workforce...they will be offered an extra $1 an hour to bring the other 49% down to their level.

Once they have the entire workforce capped at $26/hr plus benefits....an offer will be made to bring everybody up to $27/hr in exchange for eliminating pension contributions and cutting medical benefits for all "new" hires.

The cycle will continue until UPS is a 100% non-union, no-benefit workforce.

The only way to prevent this is to stop the cycle before it starts. Those who came before us refused to accept the offer of a two-tier workforce. We pay it back by paying it forward.

Yes we do need to stop it now. But if you recall, we did, at one point, have a 2 tier wage scale for part timers.
