It's always weird hearing from those who I assume are from the less populated areas of the country. A 1-hour radius from me (MA) yields about 15 centers/hubs.
That's a lot of buildings. Likely all small, sounds exactly where the cuts will come from. From my old building(which is pretty good size maybe 300 drivers)the next one south is a 45 minute ride(at 3a.m.)with at least 200 drivers and the next north is at least 45 minutes(at 3 a.m.) maybe 60 drivers. One hub an hour and a half south and one 3 hours north. I assure you it's extremely populated here.
He’s in Florida, it’s a bit bigger. Same in Az, big hubs and local satellites. We have counties bigger than your state.

And traffic can make the 15 mile drive a hour-thirty minute drive in some areas.

Sorry, but I don’t care anymore.
@Johney, you can remember when FedEx was a very powerful competitor to us, we basically reacted to there innovations for a long time. Now, it’s just a bunch of Shemps. On the level of Amazon drivers. Express is on life support.

I knew a couple of express guys when I delivered and I told them the day FedEx took over RPS as contractors I said your days are numbered. Took a while but seems to be coming true.

Really didn’t take that long because Xpress was a pretty good job and they slowly made it a crap job as well. Now they’re getting rid of it completely soon.

I remember RPS. I would be next to them at the dock. The guy would go on and on about making 1000 a week, this was early nineties too. I started asking him about his expenses. Turns out, he paid for his uniforms, insurance, lease on the vehicle, couldn’t take a vacation unless he found cover for the route, paid by pieces picked up, etc. He made about 500 a week after all that. Same as me, only I had a pension and fantastic benefits.

Most of those guys quit within a couple of years after they found out how little then ended up making for working very hard.

I knew a RPS guy "John" would always ask me "Hey do you have anything for the High school today"? A stop of mine in his area. Yea I do. Can you take this package for me and just drop it in the office? LOL. Another...stop had a gate to which I had a key.....can you drop this off for me too? Lol. Guy was hilarious...would have his wife in their personal car helping him.

You had to feel sorry for most of them.

Exactly, it was a Ponzi scheme

Poor bastards. That’s FedEx ground today. Dead end job.

and once they were invested into having their own truck and route they were stuck unless they could find some sucker to buy them out.
Actually at that point they were quite profitable, the downfall is when FedEx took over and destroyed them. I can't count how many drivers fired out of my old building for stealing were seen driving FedEx ground trucks within a month.
