T-dollies

Mechanic told me today that they were not designed to be towed without the air hooked up. The computer freaks out that its going 45+ mph and wants to retract but has no air. Thats why it thows a code and so many are sitting red tagged
How would you hook it up if you were just TO somewhere with the dolly???

He said ideally you would put dummy glad hands on the lines going to the rear. But you just drain the tank and pull it like you usually do and it will blink error codes.

Package Car is cake compared to this...
We've been told they're red-tagged because they have to be certified in every state they run. Supposedly, they're only certified in three states so far.

New converter dolly automatically narrows trailer gap at highway speeds - Truck News

New converter dolly automatically narrows trailer gap at highway speeds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Silver Eagle has come out with a converter dolly that automatically telescopes at highway speeds to reduce the gap between trailers.

Testing has shown a fuel savings of 2.5% can be delivered by the new T-Dolly. It also provides “wiggle-free tracking” for better handling and it is compatible with existing equipment, Silver Eagle announced at the Technology & Maintenance Council’s annual spring meeting.

“The only reason to have a large gap between trailers is to make a sharp turn at low speed,” said Gary Gaussoin, president of Silver Eagle. “Just think of how little you turn the steering wheel at highway speeds to change a lane; there is a very small steering angle in those situations.”

The dolly takes its speed readings from the trailer ABS and narrows the trailer gap by 12 inches when speeds of 45 mph are attained.

“From the beginning we were very aware that the T-Dolly had to fit into the fleet like any other dolly, and it had to be fail-safe and return to the normal extended position,” said Kevin Sternes, lead engineer.

UPS has been testing the system on a Portland, Ore.-Everett, Wash. Run.

“The T-Dolly will play an important part in reducing fuel consumption in our fleet,” said Bill Brentar, UPS director of maintenance and engineering for transportation equipment. “UPS drivers who use these dollies preferred the way they feel in the closed position and that they settle down right away when changing lanes.”

Silver Eagle officials said the T-Dolly will cost about US$14,500 – approximately $4,500 more than today’s standard dollies – and will deliver a payback in about 3.5 years.

I saw a couple at 2 of hubs I go to. Last night there was one set up in front of a trailer next to mine. Wonder if they will be tagged here too.

PCM here is to not use them, and red tag them if they come on property. We already noticed the front air hose is extra susceptible to being cut/crushed/damaged in the yard by a shifter using a dolly lifter, or if 'bumped' when putting a set together.

Ivis message last night was to take them to a hub and redtag them. We had 1 at our center and the driver used it in his set and tagged it when he got to the hub.

Was just told red tag all T Dollies today. One of our guys brought one in today and he crushed the error control box that came off its bracket.
This is why they are being taken out of service. Silver Eagle has not been tightening the error control box. They aren't sitting true and when the dolly is in motion and retracts, the shaft is crushing the error control box and the king box as well. I guess they have been finding all the bolts have not been tightened down. Recall notice!

We had a guy running triples crush one of the boxes because it didn't extend coming off the highway...and big surprise, they blamed him.

I would file a grievance on that with copy to:

-Dept of Labor-- if/when the union fails to protect employee and (the important one);

-DOT. They will probably be interested in knowing our company is placing equipment on the road that: 1) doesn't work as designed 2) renders equipment damaged/inoperable which could cause a accident and 3) could cause injury/death to the motoring public.
