Oh, it's not neglected. All I'm aware of is a sticky/leaky master cylinder. It stays in a 3 car garage under a cover. It was restored by prison inmates in the 90's.

Jeeps had a near monopoly on 4-wheel drive off roading for so long they didn't need to worry about quality or reliability. They were weekend toys and not daily drivers.

Still think a few nickels and dimes throughout the year is better than a lot of dollars every month for something new! Plus if I'm doing a long multiple day road trip I'll rent a wreck from Enterprise.

Just to calm Austin down, I will say that we had a 1986 Cherokee. Wife's car. Four cylinder, 4-speed and 4wd. I did not worry about her putting the kids in it in any kind of weather.

About 10 years after we traded it, she saw it sitting on the used lot of the Subaru dealer where she was shopping for a Forester. We took it out for a test drive, and 10 years and 100k miles later, the same crap was broken on it as was when we traded it. I almost bought it for myself.

That said, my brother drove a 1989 Wrangler for 20+ years. POS, and that's the best I can say about it. Two engines, three clutches and getting the frame welded every year finally convinced him to get rid of it (he's stubborn).

Cherokee (the 1985+ square ones)=good cars.

Every other Heep=trouble.
