Thats, what is funny....

You take a Mini 30, with a flush fitting 5 round magazine and the factory wood stock.... and it looks like any other hunting rifle.

Take the same rifle, drop it into an after market stock that has a pistol grip.... add a flash hider.... insert a 20 round magazine....

Now all of the sudden, it become an "assault" rifle. Based on appearance alone. And even though it's still the same rifle.

Put them side by side, and the average person will identify "one" as an assault rifle.... every time.

So why do you care if they ban the top one if you can buy the bottom one and it's the same thing? Seems like you want to fight just to fight. Why not just let them think they won?

The only thing worse than doing nothing about a problem...is doing nothing whilepretendingto do something.

Silly, feel- good legislation that serves no purpose other than to allow a politician to pander to his/her base needs to be challenged as a matter of principle.

Lets get real.

bbsam,

I thought you were a big supporter of real solutions to gun violence instead of this "feel good" nonsense that is spewed by all the Politicians.

As I started another thread that deals with real solutions --while we may not agree too often --many of your posts leads me to believe that you are a person who is a good and caring father to your children.:peaceful:
No. BUG suggested that the weapons are basically the same so I am curious what difference it makes banning one makes to him. What do you think? If it doesn't make any difference one way, why does it make a difference the other? If an "assault rifle" isn't really an assault rifle and the ignorant are simply "scared" then if the weapons are essentially the same, what is it about the "assault rifle" that makes it sought after over the hunting rifle? Is it somehow sexier, gives the owner a different image of himself. Here we go. Delving again into mental health issues.

Yes. Let's get real.
Those same politicians will refuse to do something for exactly the same reason, to pander to their base and be scored accordingly by the NRA. That also needs to be "challenged as a matter of principal". Absolutely. Let's get real.

bbsam,

Repeating myself ==but this is real. Deal with the CRIMINAL and gun problem. Mandatory sentences for gun possession without legal documentation ------long , long sentences for CRIMINALS that commit crimes with guns.

The type of gun or size of the magazine or more paperwork or national registration on the LEGAL law abiding gun owners is offensive and ludicrous.

Here's the fix...........

The gun owner's will go back to what the founding fathers meant. Gun owners will be OK with one musket and one ball just as soon as they are assured that the bad guys no longer have guns!

NEXT !!

Island--Nothing I have said contradicts what you have said. Nor do I think the president would disagree. He will probably get the universal background checks and not the ban on assault weapons. Their is absolutely nothing wrong with entering negotiations requesting something. You know you won't get. That's smart. But still, why the love for the "scary" looking rifle and not the ordinary one? Remember we can't forget mental health.

Yes lets get real, lets admit, the facts are there. We have a mental illness problems, with too many drugs being prescribed with terrible warnings, yet we want to blame guns.
Banning guns, will fix it, yeah, right. And I see the link between everyone having healthcare, to go to the doc and say, Hey man Im depressed. Heres some crap, see ya in a month. People with too much time on their hands, bad drugs and black market available guns. it will get worse. Should We Be Looking at Prescription Drugs for a Possible Cause of Increase in Mass Murders? | Health Impact News

See the correlation here, if not open your eyes. Dont forget the mental health issue, as if it was a joke.

no, tooner. Mental health is not a joke and it is far, far bigger than the sliver that you choose to illuminate.

Not only did Holder allow for straw buyers to sell weapons to known criminals , he also broke international laws .
Thus that would make him a war criminal .

Enlighten me, what is that sliver?

everything that leads up to the commission of a crime rather than piecing it together after the fact. Drunks and drug addicts, people on med or even worse those who simply stop taking them. Some might say religios fanatics. Maybe those into hardcore porn. People on a cult, people who exhibit antisocial behavior. The neurotic , the psychotic. Abusers, the victims of abuse because that is an asy cycle to predict. When you factor it all in, you really do end up stomping on the Second Amendment far more than anythin having to do with any gun legislation.

I think I will buy a scary black gun at the gun show next weekend.
Any suggestions as to make/model?

A M4 style carbine that fires 5.56 NATO/.223. You want one that is designed to handle a 5.56 round, which is a hotter load than a .223. You can shoot .223 in a 5.56, but its not wise to shoot 5.56 out of an earlier designed AR. The breach and barrel are stronger for the 5.56. Personally, I would go with one with flip-up sights on a flat-top type Picatinny rail, over the older style A2 carrying handle and front sight. A quad rail for the front hand guard allows you to be able to mount all kinds of accessories.

As far as make, there are about 85 companies that build AR style rifles. They used to start at about $700 and run up to a few thousand if you wanted to go that way. You can also get on a waiting list and buy a kit that has everything except a stripped lower receiver, so its possible to put one together for $600. I was going to buy a Smith & Wesson MP 15 that was loaded with all the Mag-pul accessories I wanted for $1000 before my brother gave me my DPMS A-15. DPMS was a military contractor that is now owned by the same group that owns Bushmaster. Its considered a cheaper gun, but it shoots every time and I hit at what I aim at.

I don't think that I would buy one right now with the high prices driven by the current hysteria. I don't see any way that a ban will go through the House or Senate for that matter. I think in a few months the prices will come back down along with the price of ammo. I'm currently thinking about getting a Ruger 10/22 just to shoot with cheaper ammo.
