It's a bolt action. She shot the bear, its chamber is empty.

Still, responsible ownership will say you never ever assume the chamber is empty. Also, after shooting large game and approaching that game, isn't it possible that the chamber is not empty? That in case the animal is only wounded the rifle would be at the ready, locked and loaded as it were? I honestly know very little about hunting but it would make sense to me.

I think he must mean it's not safe to lay the rifle across the dead animal's body .
I wonder if the hunter had stuck the rifle into the bears mouth would have made a better picture , after all it would have been pointed in a safe direction .

Never assume the chamber is empty. That would be 'responsible'.

And that is a valid point.


But.... if you would notice, she already took the time, to put on the scope cap(s).

So it's safe to assume (for a knowledgeable hunter) that she made the weapon safe.... before the picture.
