The rest are just invented by you. I have no problem with him committing suicide to save the public the expense of a trial. He was also a gun owner (obviously) but it is very likely he would have found another way to commit suicide if he had no gun so that isn't an important factor.

I gotta piece of 3 in pvc about the length of the barrel plus receiver and capped it on one end.
put the barrel and receiver in it and filled it with mineral spirits for a few hours.
the wood I just let sit in the sun and wiped it down every couple of hours

Cosmoline does suck. It does a great job of keeping stored guns rust free but I really hate that junk. The Russian/Chinese imports don't really use Cosmoline either. It is very similar though. I'm not sure but I think the junk in imports is thicker than US Cosmoline.

If I stashed something I would use an airtight tube and probably oil the gun heavily but not grease it up. You could cosmoline everything but I don't think that would be necessary if you used a good container. PVC pipe all sealed up might be OK as a container.
