We are not a pure democracy. The cultural misuse of the word makes it understandable that most people don't understand that. We are a constitutional democracy, known as a republic. You can't just vote in who you want and have them pass just any laws. The laws must conform to the constitution so as not to infringe on the rights of the individual. Without that, democracy is just another form of tyranny.
